Tutorial

This tutorial provides you with a brief overview of this webtool.

We designed this website and webtool to help you develop a logic model for your project, select the D&I TMF or TMFs for your project, combine or adapt TMFs as needed to fit your study or practice context, and integrate the TMF(s) throughout your project, including assessment. This tutorial video will provide you with a brief overview of this website with a special focus on the support pages. Separate tutorial videos are provided for each section of the webtool below.

Webtool Overview

The interactive D&I TMFs webtool includes six main sections which are Plan, Select, Combine, Adapt, Use, and Assess Constructs. We designed this webtool to help you develop a logic TMF for your project, select the D&I TMF or TMFs for your project, combine or adapt TMFs as needed to fit your study or practice context, and integrate the TMF throughout your project, including assessment.

If you are new to D&I Science, we suggest that you use this webtool in a linear fashion starting with the Plan section and moving through each consecutive sections.

If you have at least some experience with D&I Science, you might use most relevant sections of the webtool and possibly not in a linear manner

Each section has a brief description and recommended strategies as well as worksheets and examples. One of the examples is continued across all sections to allow you to appreciate how to use the webtool in its entirety. We created separate tutorials for each section of the webtool, which you can access below.

Plan

This section of the webtool will help you create a logic model for your D&I project. This logic model can help identify key constructs for you project. By a construct, we mean a concept or element in your D&I TMF, intervention, implementation strategy or hypothesized outcome(s). Constructs are used in this webtool to help you select potential D&I TMFs and identify appropriate assessments for your D&I project. Examples of logic models are provided below. We STRONGLY ADVISE you to view the brief videos and then work through the resources with respect to your project. You will end up with a completed, project tailored logic model that you can use for your grant or paper as well as in the other webtool sections when selecting D&I TMF. This page is divided into two main sections. The first helps you create a logic model for your project and the second helps with the selection of key constructs. Each section has its own video, worksheet and examples demonstrating how to apply these concepts to your project.

Select

The Select section of the webtool allows for the review including the comparison of included D&I TMF. There are a few ways you can access and navigate the catalog of TMF.

  • View Strategies provides you with strategies and tips to select D&I TMF.
  • View All D&I TMFs allows you to review and choose among all available TMFs on the site. You can compare TMFs by selecting the check box next to the TMF name. Additional information on each TMF can be found by clicking on the Description link under each TMF name.
  • Search D&I TMFs allows you to search for D&I TMFs by entering a keyword. You can also individually set your own criteria to search within a particular socio-ecological level (such as organization, policy, or community), choose which constructs apply and whether you’re searching for dissemination and/or implementation. When choosing the constructs, WE RECOMMEND that you choose no more than five key constructs. Results will be organized by the ‘degree of fit’ as measured by the number of matching constructs from the TMF with your set search criteria. Secondary sorting is done by the number of citations for the primary publication associated with the TMF since 2016 as noted by Google Scholar.

Each D&I TMF has its own separate page with the full set of metadata including linkage to the relevant website for the TMF, key citations including example applications and ratings and comments for the given TMF.

Combine

The Combine section provides you with strategies on how to use more than one D&I TMF. There are many occasions when selecting just one TMF will not address all your needs for guiding the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation activities. When one TMF does not suffice, you might decide to select multiple TMFs and combine them.

The dropdowns provide an overview of key issues including specific examples where D&I TMFs were combined successfully. These issues include:

  • Reasons to combine
  • First steps for combining
  • Key considerations when combining
  • Published examples of successful D&I TMF combinations

Adapt

There is likely no D&I TMF that will perfectly fit every aspect of your D&I project, so it may be necessary to adapt a model for your D&I project. The Adapt section summarizes considerations for adapting an existing model to improve fit to the context of your D&I project. In this section we provide strategies to adapt D&I TMFs. The dropdowns include:

  • What are some reasons to adapt a D&I TMF?
  • What are the benefits of adapting an existing D&I TMF instead of creating a new D&I TMF?
  • What should be considered before adapting an existing D&I TMF?
  • How much of a D&I TMF can be adapted?

The last section provides a worksheet and an example to support D&I TMF adaptation. This includes the study introduced in the Plan section, the 5 A’s.

Use

Once you have Selected, Combined, and/or Adapted your D&I TMF(s), it is time to put it/them into action. The Use section provides guidance on how to operationalize the selected D&I TMF(s) throughout your D&I project. In this section, we provide strategies to use D&I TMFs. The dropdowns include:

  • What does it mean to use a D&I TMF?
  • When should you start to use a D&I TMF?
  • Across what stages of a D&I projects should D&I TMFs be used?
  • How can D&I TMFs support the selection of assessments and evaluation of a study?

The last section provides a worksheet and an example to support D&I TMF use. This includes the study introduced in the Plan section, the 5 A’s.

Assess

The Assess Constructs page provides a list of constructs affiliated with D&I TMFs and links to assessments for these constructs. This page allows you to quickly browse constructs, as well as additional information on each construct in the descriptions. You can quickly access a reference to each TMF which aligns with a given construct, and also the “elements” or components abstracted from each TMF. We are currently in the process of finding a good solution to provide validated assessments relating to the TMFs and constructs included in our webtool. We appreciate your patience as the best solution is formulated.
